Meet Family Advisory Council Member: Rachael Pipkins

1. Tell us a little about your family's oncology journey.
Preston was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia at 12 years old. We went to the ER for what I suspected was anemia and he ended up being hospitalized for the next 6 months. During his hospitalization he turned 13 and celebrated many major holidays including Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and Valentines Day. Valentine's Day was a very special day for our family this year, Preston received his bone marrow transplant from his little brother Cameron. During his leukemia chemotherapy treatment, we found out he would require a BMT to have a chance to achieve remission. Today is 6 months post BMT and Preston is doing well in his recovery and in remission.
2. Why is being on the family council so important to you?
I spent a long time living at Children's Hospital during Preston's treatment. I saw the need for improvement in certain areas and through personal experiences I encountered and wanted the opportunity to make creative and positive influences on future families during their admissions.
3. What is your favorite thing to do as a family?
Spending time together outside being active.
4. What is your favorite oncology program event/camp that you have done as a family and why?
I don't think we have a favorite but personally meeting Dirk during Christmas was certainly a peak moment we will never forget.
5. Other things you think would be helpful for people to know about you or your child’s journey?
Preston wanted to be helpful and encouraging to other children during their time at the hospital similarly to the role of child life specialists.
6. What is one tip or piece of advice you would give to another parent who is just beginning their journey?
Take it day by day or moment by moment. Stay focused on getting through one day at a time to keep yourself from unnecessary worry. If possible, try to find the joy when you can in your current situation. Staying in a sad or worrying state of mind isn't good for you or your child/family.
